Why This Recipe Works
This Burger Sauce is the one I always keep in the fridge. It takes any burger or sandwich to the next level. Here’s why this recipe works:
- Creamy, Tangy, and Balanced: The mix of mayo, ketchup, mustard, and relish creates a rich, zippy flavor with just the right touch of sweetness.
- Packed with Flavor: Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder add savory depth that makes every bite stand out, a lot like my Mushroom Sauce for Steak.
- Takes 5 Minutes: Just stir everything together in a bowl and it’s ready. No cooking and no extra steps, just like this Easy Romesco Sauce.
- Not Just for Burgers: I love using it as a dip for Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries, a spread for sandwiches, or a topping for grilled veggies. It works with everything.

Ingredients
- Mayonnaise – Creamy and rich, mayo forms the smooth base of the sauce, helping all the flavors blend together beautifully.
- Ketchup – Adds sweetness and tang, giving the sauce that signature burger-shop flavor everyone loves.
- Dijon Mustard – This sharp, slightly spicy mustard adds depth and a subtle kick. You can adjust the amount to taste.
- Dill Relish or Pickles – Chopped pickles or relish add crunch and a punch of briny flavor that cuts through the richness.
- Worcestershire Sauce – A little goes a long way. This savory ingredient adds umami and brings out the boldness of the other flavors.
- Garlic Powder – Just enough to give the sauce a hint of garlicky warmth without overpowering it.
- Smoked Paprika – This gives the sauce a touch of smokiness and color, rounding out the flavor with a gentle heat.

Substitutions & Variations
Here are some of my favorite substitutions and variations:
- Mayonnaise Base: I usually use classic mayo in this burger sauce recipe, but you can use avocado mayo, olive oil-based mayo, or even Greek yogurt for a lighter option with a bit of tang.
- Ketchup Options: Ketchup adds sweetness and acidity, but you can reduce the amount or use tomato paste mixed with a little vinegar if you prefer something less sweet.
- Mustard Choices: Dijon adds a sharp bite, but yellow mustard works well for a more classic burger flavor. You can also try spicy brown mustard for a bolder taste.
- Make It Sweeter: You can add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup if you like a slightly sweeter burger sauce. This works especially well with smoky or spicy burgers.

FAQs
You can. Dijon adds a nice sharpness, but yellow mustard works in a pinch.
You can skip it, but it adds a deep umami flavor that balances the sweetness of the ketchup and relish. A small splash of soy sauce or a pinch of anchovy paste can also work as a backup.
Absolutely. Add a dash of hot sauce, cayenne pepper, or finely chopped jalapeño if you want some heat.
Store the sauce in an airtight jar or container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Stir before each use as it may separate slightly over time.

Burger Sauce Recipe
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons dijon mustard, or more to taste
- ¼ cup dill relish, or finely chopped dill pickles
- 1 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a medium sized bowl.
- Stir until fully combined. Taste and adjust the spiciness and tanginess of relish, if desired.
- Store in a jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
- Use dill relish or finely chopped dill pickles for the best tangy flavor. Sweet relish works too but will make the sauce noticeably sweeter.
- Start with the base recipe, then adjust to your taste. Add more mustard for extra tang, or more relish for a crunchier texture.
- Mix the sauce by hand for a slightly chunky texture, or blend it for a smoother, more uniform finish.
- For extra depth, don’t skip the Worcestershire sauce. It adds a subtle savory note that balances the sweetness of the ketchup.
- Want some heat? Add a pinch of cayenne, a few dashes of hot sauce, or some finely chopped jalapeño.
- Let the sauce chill for at least 30 minutes before serving. This gives the flavors time to meld and deepen.
- Store in an airtight jar or container in the fridge. It keeps well for up to 2 weeks and tastes even better after a day or two.
