Why This Recipe Works
These Espresso Chocolate Truffles are rich, smooth, and deeply chocolatey, making them perfect for gifting, holidays, or an elegant no-bake dessert. Here’s why I love them:
- Intense Chocolate Espresso Flavor: Dark chocolate paired with espresso powder creates a bold, balanced flavor that coffee and chocolate lovers can’t resist. It’s just as delicious as my Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cups.
- Ultra-Smooth, Creamy Texture: Warm cream melted into finely chopped chocolate creates a silky ganache that sets perfectly for rolling. Each truffle melts in your mouth.
- Easy No-Bake Dessert: With just a handful of ingredients and no oven required, these truffles are surprisingly simple to make. They look fancy but come together with minimal effort, like these Dark Chocolate Covered Stuffed Dates.
- Perfect for Gifting and Entertaining: These espresso chocolate truffles are ideal for holidays, dinner parties, or homemade gifts. Roll them in cocoa powder, powdered sugar, or nuts for a beautiful finish.
- Customizable and Make-Ahead Friendly: You can add coffee liqueur, drizzle with melted chocolate, or sprinkle flaky salt on top. They store well in the fridge, making them great for prepping ahead.

Ingredients
- Semi-Sweet or Dark Chocolate – Finely chopped so it melts smoothly into the cream. Use dark chocolate for a more intense flavor or semi-sweet for a slightly softer, sweeter taste.
- Heavy Cream – Creates the rich, silky texture of the truffle center. If you need a lighter option, you can use coconut cream for a dairy-free version.
- Instant Espresso Powder – Adds a deep coffee flavor that enhances the chocolate without overpowering it. You can adjust the amount for a stronger or milder espresso note.
- Cocoa Powder, Powdered Sugar, or Finely Chopped Nuts – Used for coating the truffles. Cocoa gives a classic finish, powdered sugar adds sweetness, and nuts bring a bit of crunch and texture.

Instructions

- Heat Cream: In a small saucepan, warm the heavy cream over medium-low heat until it just begins to simmer. Do not let it boil.
- Dissolve Espresso: Stir in the instant espresso powder until fully dissolved, infusing the cream with rich coffee flavor.

- Melt Chocolate: Place the finely chopped chocolate in a heat-safe bowl. Pour the hot espresso cream over it and let it sit for 2 minutes to soften the chocolate.
- Stir Until Smooth: Gently stir the mixture until it becomes silky and smooth. Add the vanilla extract and a pinch of flaky salt, stirring to combine.

- Chill Mixture: Cover the bowl and refrigerate for about 1 hour, or until the mixture is firm enough to scoop.
- Shape Truffles: Scoop tablespoon-sized portions and roll them into balls. If the mixture is sticky, dust your hands lightly with cocoa powder.

- Coat and Chill: Roll each truffle in cocoa powder, powdered sugar, or finely chopped nuts. Chill again until ready to serve.
- Optional Finish: For extra flavor, drizzle with melted chocolate or sprinkle with flaky sea salt before serving.

Substitutions & Variations
Here are some of my favorite substitutions and variations:
- Chocolate Choices: I like using dark chocolate for a bold flavor, but milk chocolate makes them a little softer and sweeter. You can even mix the two for a balanced taste.
- Flavor Add-Ins: Try adding a splash of coffee liqueur or a bit of orange zest for a different twist. A drop of almond or peppermint extract also works nicely.
- Coating Options: I usually roll mine in cocoa powder, but crushed nuts or shredded coconut add great texture. You can also drizzle them with melted chocolate for a smooth finish.
- Topping Ideas: Sprinkle a little flaky sea salt on top before chilling. It gives a nice contrast to the rich chocolate.

What to Serve with Espresso Chocolate Truffles
Sweets
- These Espresso Chocolate Truffles make a lovely dessert platter when paired with Chocolate Bark with Cherries and Pistachios. The mix of textures and flavors feels both rich and balanced.
- For something creamy to serve alongside, try Blood Orange Panna Cotta. The citrus notes pair beautifully with the deep espresso flavor.
- If you’re planning a cozy dessert spread, add a batch of Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies for a sweet and salty contrast.
Cocktails
- We love serving these truffles with a Classic Espresso Martini for a bold coffee pairing that feels perfectly matched.
- For something lighter, an Aperol Spritz adds a refreshing balance to the rich chocolate.
- They also pair nicely with an Extra Dirty Martini or any of the 5 Easy Prosecco Holiday Cocktails when you want to turn dessert into a celebration.

FAQs
The espresso powder enhances the chocolate flavor, but you can leave it out if you prefer. If you want a milder coffee note, use half the amount or substitute with instant coffee granules.
Absolutely. A splash of coffee liqueur, a pinch of cinnamon, or a bit of orange zest all work well. You can also roll them in coconut or drizzle with melted chocolate for variety.
This usually happens if the cream is too hot or the chocolate isn’t chopped finely enough. Let the cream cool slightly before pouring it over the chocolate, and stir gently until smooth.
Store the truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. For longer storage, freeze them for up to one month and let them come to room temperature before serving.

Espresso Chocolate Truffles
Ingredients
- 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate, or dark chocolate, finely chopped
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon instant espresso powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 pinch flaky salt
- cocoa powder, powdered sugar, or finely chopped nuts (for coating)
Instructions
- Heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan over medium-low heat just until it begins to simmer, being careful not to let it boil, then stir in the instant espresso powder until fully dissolved.
- Place the chopped chocolate in a heat-safe bowl, pour the hot cream over it, and let it sit undisturbed for about 2 minutes.
- Gently stir the mixture until smooth and silky, then stir in the vanilla extract and flaky salt.
- Cover the bowl and refrigerate for about 1 hour, or until the mixture is firm enough to scoop.
- Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of the chilled mixture and roll them into balls, lightly dusting your hands with cocoa powder if the mixture becomes sticky.
- Roll the truffles in cocoa powder, powdered sugar, or finely chopped nuts, then refrigerate until ready to serve.
Notes
- Chop the chocolate finely so it melts evenly when the warm cream is poured over it. Large chunks can leave small unmelted bits.
- Let the cream sit on the chocolate for a couple of minutes before stirring. This helps the chocolate soften and blend smoothly.
- Stir gently with a spatula instead of whisking to keep the ganache silky and free of air bubbles.
- If the mixture looks too soft after chilling, refrigerate it a bit longer until it’s firm enough to scoop.
- Dust your hands with cocoa powder before rolling to prevent the truffles from sticking.
- Use a small cookie scoop for even portions and a uniform look.
- Try different coatings like cocoa powder, powdered sugar, or finely chopped nuts for variety in flavor and texture.
- For a stronger coffee flavor, add a splash of espresso or coffee liqueur to the ganache before chilling.
- Store truffles in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze for longer storage.
- Serve them slightly chilled or at room temperature for the best texture and flavor.
