Can’t believe that Christmas is around the corner. I am excited for this week because my birthday is on the 17th and my husband and I are adventuring out to the mountains to cozy up by the fire, enjoy some jacuzzi time, eat some yummy eats and drink some tasty drinks. But before we head out, I wanted to share this super easy idea for your holiday gifts. Flavored salts are so easy to make and I bet you have everything in your cupboards and refrigerator to make these great gifts.
Seasoning with herbs, spices and sprinkles of salt is one of the easiest ways to add flavor to your meals, particularly when you’re cooking up healthy meals and reducing some of the traditional flavor makers (like butter). While plain salt can do the trick for elevating flavors, adding a pinch that’s been spiked with herbs, citrus or spices can really elevate your recipes. The possibilities are virtually endless, but I’m going to show you how to make three of my favorite flavored salts. Your teachers, family, friends and neighbors are going to be very thankful for you this holiday season when they open their jar of flavored salts!
I used Jacobsen Kosher Salt to infuse these salts and I think it’s a great and versatile salt to use, plus it’s affordable too. But, you can always use sea salt instead too.
Dried citrus and herbs is one of my favorite seasonings for salts. Simply grate the zest of the citrus with a microplane, then set it out on a baking sheet to dry. This may take a few hours, but if you’re a little short on time, spread the grated zest on a parchment-lined baking sheet, then dry in a oven set to 170F for about 10- 15, check it every 5 minutes to make sure it doesn’t dry out too much. Once the zest is dry, gently crumble it with your fingers.
If you’re gifting these salts, transfer them to a pretty Weck Jars or small mason jars, tie with a ribbon and attach a card that includes some ideas for using the salts along with the flavor you are gifting them. For example, you could suggest that the salts be sprinkled on chicken or shrimp before cooking, tossed with freshly popped popcorn, mixed into scrambled eggs or used as a component of a rub.
