Why This Recipe Works

These Air Fryer Tortilla Chips are my favorite way to make crispy, salty chips at home—fast! Here’s why this recipe works:

  • Crispy Without the Grease: These chips turn out perfectly crunchy every time—no deep frying, no mess, just golden, airy goodness.
  • Quick and Customizable: They’re ready in under 10 minutes and easy to season with sea salt, chili powder, or lime zest—whatever I’m in the mood for.
  • Small Batch Friendly: I love that I can make just enough for snacking without turning on the oven or heating up the whole kitchen.
  • Perfect with Everything: Whether it’s Homemade Guac, Fresh Pico De Gallo, queso, or just on their own, these chips never last long in my house.

Three yellow corn tortillas, a small glass bowl of white coconut oil, and a can of Trader Joe’s avocado oil spray on a light marble surface to make air fryer tortilla chips.

Ingredients

  • Corn Tortillas – The base of these chips, corn tortillas crisp up beautifully in the air fryer. Their hearty texture and subtle corn flavor make them perfect for snacking.
  • Avocado Oil Spray – A light spritz of avocado oil helps the chips crisp evenly and adds a hint of richness without deep frying. It’s totally optional but highly recommended.
  • Sea Salt – A simple sprinkle of sea salt enhances the natural flavor of the tortillas and gives each chip that crave-worthy finish.

Substitutions & Variations

Here are some of my favorite substitutions and variations:

  • Tortilla Choices: I usually use 6-inch corn tortillas, but flour tortillas work too if you prefer a softer, puffier chip. You can even try grain-free tortillas like cassava or almond flour for a gluten-free twist.
  • Spicy: A simple sea salt finish is perfect, but for more flavor, sprinkle the chips with chili powder, smoked paprika, Tajín, or a squeeze of lime juice right after air frying.
  • Sweet & Salty: For a dessert-style version, swap the salt for cinnamon sugar and use flour tortillas. These make the perfect sweet crunch with fruit salsa or whipped cream.
  • Cut Styles: I usually go with triangle cuts, but you can slice the tortillas into strips for dippable chip sticks or even break them into rustic shards for a casual look.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

Mexican Sides

  • These air fryer tortilla chips are the perfect crunchy companion to classic Mexican sides. We love serving them with Simple Guacamole, Fresh Pico De Gallo, or a scoop of Mexican Street Corn Salad for a simple and satisfying snack board.
  • They’re also great for taco night—just set them out with your favorite toppings and let everyone dig in between bites. We love it with our Salmon Fish Tacos or Chili Lime Shrimp Tacos.
  • For gatherings, we like pairing them with Avocado Mango Salsa to keep things bold and flavorful.

Dips

  • These chips were made for dipping. Serve them with Easy Artichoke Dip, Trader Joe’s Buffalo Chicken Dip, or a Creamy Caramelized Onion Dip for a fun party spread.
  • They also hold up beautifully to heartier dips like Crab Spinach Artichoke Dip or Loaded Hummus with all the toppings.

FAQs

What kind of tortillas work best?

Corn tortillas are ideal for this recipe. They crisp up beautifully in the air fryer and give you that classic chip flavor and texture. Flour tortillas will work too, but the texture will be slightly softer and puffier.

Why are my chips not crispy enough?

Chances are they were overcrowded in the basket or didn’t cook long enough. Cook in batches, spread the chips out for good airflow, and listen for the chips to start “jumping” toward the end—it’s a sign they’re done!

How do I prevent the chips from flying around in the air fryer?

Light chips can sometimes shift in powerful air fryers. To help, stack them in a slightly overlapping but staggered pattern or place a trivet or rack on top to keep them in place.

How long do air fryer tortilla chips stay fresh?

Store cooled chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. They’re best the day they’re made, but you can re-crisp them in the air fryer for 1–2 minutes if needed.

These Air Fryer Tortilla Chips are how I skip the store-bought stuff. They're fast, fresh, and made with just three ingredients for crispy chips begging to be dipped!

Equipment

  • air fryer

Ingredients

  • 6 corn tortillas, 6-inch
  • avocado oil spray, for coating
  • flaky sea salt

Instructions

Prepare the Tortillas:

  • Stack three tortillas on a cutting board.
  • Using a sharp knife, slice them in half lengthwise to create two equal halves.
  • Keeping the halves in a stack, cut one half into three equal triangles.
  • Repeat this process with the remaining tortillas.

Air Fry the Tortillas:

  • Place half of the cut tortillas in the air fryer basket, ensuring there’s enough space for proper airflow.
  • Arrange them in a varied stack for even cooking.
  • Lightly spray the chips with avocado oil spray.
  • You may need to cook the tortilla chips in a couple of batches for optimal crispiness. Typically, two batches suffice for most air fryers.

Cook to Perfection:

  • Close the air fryer drawer and set the temperature to 400°F for 4 minutes.
  • After 4 minutes, open the drawer and rearrange the chips for even air circulation.
  • Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes. Generally, 7 minutes should achieve perfect crispness, but adjust according to your preference.
  • Listen for the chips to start jumping as they near completion.

Season and Serve:

  • Sprinkle the freshly cooked chips with sea salt immediately.
  • Serve them with your favorite dip and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use corn tortillas for the best crunch and authentic flavor—they crisp up better than flour tortillas.
  • Cut your tortilla triangles as evenly as possible so they cook uniformly and finish at the same time.
  • Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. Cook in batches if needed to ensure proper air circulation and crispiness.
  • A light spray of avocado oil helps the chips get extra golden and crispy, but you can skip it for an oil-free option.
  • Rearrange or shake the chips halfway through cooking to promote even browning on all sides.
  • Listen for the chips to start jumping or rustling near the end—that’s a sign they’re getting crispy and almost done.
  • Season the chips right after cooking while they’re still hot so the salt (or other seasonings) sticks better.
  • Let the chips cool completely before storing to prevent them from getting soft or soggy in the container.
  • This recipe is part of our Air Fryer Recipes Collection.
  • We love serving them with Simple Guacamole and Fresh Pico De Gallo!
