Healthy cottage cheese dip
This cottage cheese dip has quickly become a staple in my kitchen, holding its own against other favorites like whipped feta, whipped Brie, and whipped miso cream cheese dip!
Cottage cheese is blended with fresh dill, chives, avocado, lemon, and savory seasonings, transforming it into a creamy, velvety, and herbaceous masterpiece. Plus, the herbs and avocado give it the most enticing vibrant green hue that makes it look almost too pretty to eat!
Serve it chilled with your favorite dippers, like fresh veggie sticks, crackers, cubed bread, and pita. I’ve even been known to pair it with potato chips for a more indulgent treat!

Ingredients & substitutions
- Cottage cheese: Use regular cottage cheese to create a creamy base loaded with protein. I don’t recommend using low-fat cottage cheese for this recipe. Ricotta will also work if you don’t have access to cottage cheese.
- Chives: Impart a mild, onion-like flavor. You can also use green onions, but I suggest reducing the amount added.
- Dill: Brings a fresh, citrus-forward flavor with anise undertones. You can also try other fresh herbs like parsley, basil, or fennel fronds.
- Avocado: Adds healthy fats to this cottage cheese dip, giving it a rich, buttery, and creamy consistency. If you don’t have avocado, try green peas with a touch of olive oil.
- Lemon: Provides a touch of acidity to brighten the dish. Lime juice will work too.
- Garlic & onion powder: Both add a savory depth with subtle zesty notes. You can use minced garlic and onion for a fresher and more vibrant flavor.
- Kosher salt: Enhances the other flavors of the dip. Sea salt or table salt will also work.

Frequently asked questions
If your cottage cheese dip has turned out a bit watery, it’s likely due to an underripe avocado. Just make sure you let it rest in the fridge for longer to firm up.
The color may vary due to the freshness of your avocado and the quantity of herbs you add. Just taste and adjust as you go! A slight variation in color shouldn’t affect the flavor too much.
Yes, this cottage cheese dip is both low-carb and keto-friendly.
Storage & reheating
If you have any leftovers or want to double the recipe, follow these simple storage tips:
- Fridge: Transfer the dip to an airtight container and store it in the fridge for up to 5 days.
- Freezer: Although the texture may change slightly when thawed, you can store this cottage cheese dip in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight and it should be ready to go in the morning.
- Prep ahead: If you can, I suggest making this dip a day in advance for the flavors to meld together overnight. It’s great for making in advance to enjoy throughout the week as a snack or spread!
Variations
- Zesty rosemary: Add lemon zest and a hint of rosemary for a unique flavor.
- Cream cheese: Mix the dip with softened cream cheese for added thickness.
- Tropical: If you like fruit, try adding pineapple or mango chunks instead of the savory herbs and seasonings for a sweet snack.
- Nuts: For a little crunch, mix in a few almonds or walnuts after blending.
- Spicy: Try adding jalapeños or chipotle peppers for a hot and smoky variation.
- Cheesy: If you’re a cheese lover like me, try adding in grated Parmesan or feta.
- Chunky: Mix in black beans and corn for a Tex-Mex take on this recipe.
Top tips
- Source fresh herbs: Always use fresh herbs for the best flavor. If you can’t find fresh chives and dill, try this recipe with another herb!
- Ripe avocado: Ensure your avocado is ripe. It should give slightly under pressure.
- Consistency: Adjust the thickness with a splash of olive oil or water to make this cottage cheese dip just right for your taste preferences.
- Chill: Let your dip sit for an hour in the fridge before serving. This way, the flavors will develop and the consistency will be much better.
