This Homemade Ranch Dressing is incredibly creamy, tangy, and rich! Made with a simple blend of sour cream, buttermilk, and fresh herbs, it’s a healthier alternative to store-bought versions without skimping on taste. Use it as a dip for veggie sticks, dressing for green salads, or hot wings pairing.

Why This Recipe Works

Making your own sauces, like homemade Caesar dressing, is always the best option! They taste way better, you can adjust the ingredients according to your taste preferences, and they’re much more cost-effective than store-bought alternatives.

This easy homemade ranch dressing is no different! It’s luxuriously creamy, tangy, and customizable, all at the same time. All you need is your favorite herb (mine is dill) and a few other ingredients, and this herbaceous, garlicky dressing is done in 5 minutes.

It goes perfectly with my extra crispy air fryer wings, providing a creamy contrast to the spicy rub. You can also substitute the dressing in my classic Cobb salad or chicken Cobb salad for a flavor variation. The options are endless!

Ingredients for ranch dressing.

Ingredients

  • Sour Cream: Adds a creamy texture and tangy flavor to the base of the dressing.
  • Buttermilk: Provides the dressing’s signature tang and makes it more pourable. Adjust the amount to achieve your preferred consistency.
  • Mayonnaise: Enhances the creaminess and adds a slight sweetness and tang. I recommend full-fat mayonnaise for the best results.
  • Lemon Juice: Provides a fresh, zesty kick, cutting through the richness and brightening the overall flavor profile. Make sure to use freshly squeezed lemon juice here.
  • Garlic: Grated garlic cloves offer a sharp, aromatic depth that can’t be missed.
  • Garlic & Onion Powder: Both seasonings complement the fresh garlic, adding a milder, more rounded flavor and a subtle sweetness.
  • Dill: Fresh dill adds a herbaceous and refreshing element. Dried dill can be used instead of fresh, but start with less as it’s more concentrated.
Mixing creamy dressing with herbs.

Instructions

  1. Mix the Base: In a medium-sized bowl, mix 1 cup of sour cream with ¼ cup of buttermilk. Stir in ⅓ cup of mayonnaise, combining the base ingredients thoroughly.
  2. Add the Seasonings: Squeeze in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, then add 1 grated clove of garlic, 1 teaspoon each of garlic and onion powder, 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, and 2 tablespoons of finely chopped dill.
  3. Whisk the Dressing: Whisk all the ingredients together until well combined. Taste your sauce and adjust the seasoning according to your preferences — add more salt if needed or a splash more buttermilk to thin it out.
  4. Jar and Chill: Transfer your homemade ranch dressing to a mason jar and cover it with a lid. Refrigerate it for at least an hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld together, then drizzle it over salads, use it as a dip, or add it to sandwiches and wraps!

Substitutions & Variations

  • Sour Cream: Greek yogurt also works for a healthier, protein-rich alternative while maintaining the right thickness.
  • Mayonnaise: If you’re avoiding eggs, opt for egg-free or vegan mayonnaise.
  • Lemon: You can replace lemon juice with white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
  • Garlic: If you’re out of fresh garlic, increase the garlic powder by an additional half teaspoon, or use minced jarred garlic in a pinch.
  • Onion Powder: If onion powder is not available, try finely minced fresh chives or a small amount of grated fresh onion for a similar subtle sweetness and bite.
  • Herbs: Not a fan of dill? Try fresh chopped chives, parsley, or cilantro as alternatives. Each one will give you a completely different ranch flavor profile!
  • Spicy: Add a dash of cayenne pepper, paprika, or finely diced jalapeños for a ranch dressing with a kick.
  • Dairy-Free: Swap sour cream and buttermilk with dairy-free alternatives such as unsweetened coconut yogurt and soy milk mixed with a tablespoon of vinegar.

Storing

Homemade ranch dressing stores incredibly well. In fact, it’s even better the next day once the ingredients have had time to meld together. Just follow these tips to keep it fresh and flavorful:

  • Fridge: Store your ranch dressing in a sealed mason jar or airtight glass container in the refrigerator. It will keep well for up to 1-2 weeks.
  • Freezer: For easy thawing, freeze the ranch dressing in small, airtight containers or ice cube trays. Let it thaw in the fridge overnight before using it again.

Expert Tips

  • Room Temperature Ingredients: Let your sour cream, buttermilk, and mayonnaise come to room temperature before mixing. This helps to combine the ingredients smoothly and prevents any clumping.
  • Grating the Garlic: Use a microplane or fine grater for your garlic to ensure there are no large chunks in your homemade ranch dressing.
  • Slowly Add Buttermilk: If you prefer a thinner consistency, add the buttermilk gradually until you reach your desired thickness. This allows for better control over the texture.
  • Whisk Properly: Use a whisk to combine the ingredients thoroughly. This ensures that the herbs and other seasonings are evenly distributed and the dressing is smooth.

FAQs

How can I make the dressing thicker?

For a thicker, more dip-like consistency, add more sour cream or reduce the amount of buttermilk. You could also blend in a small amount of softened cream cheese or add extra mayonnaise to increase the thickness.

How can I make my ranch dressing less tangy?

If your ranch dressing is too tangy, balance it out by adding a little more mayonnaise or sour cream. You can also add a pinch of sugar or honey to mellow the tanginess.

Can homemade ranch dressing be used as a marinade?

Yes, homemade ranch dressing makes an excellent marinade for chicken, pork, or vegetables. The acidity and herbs help to tenderize and flavor the meat or veggies perfectly!
